Direct observation of the energy band gaps for surface-plasma waves propagating
through corrugated dielectric-structure on a flat metal surface
We demonstrated first to our knowledge that the surface plasmon polaritions(SPP)
band gap can be observed directly from corrugated dielectric structures on a flat
metal surface. The picture shown left is a SPP dipersion curves revealing
the SPP band gap(2.038x1014/s) near the red color region, and right-hand side
the dispersion curves calculated by using two different methods of plane wave expansion
(solid curves) and rigorus coupled wave analysis (small boxes), confirm the experimental
result to its theory.

Enhanced magnetic and spin-photonic properties using metastable quantum structure
When atoms form a solid state, most of the atoms lose their magnetic property.
Even for the ferromagnetic materials in solid state, their magnetic moments are
far less than their maximum possible values in the atomic state. Usually the magnetic
moments in the solid state are about a half of the corresponding atomic values.
Many efforts have been devoted to increase in the magnetic moments of those materials
in various solid states, such as alloys, thin films, interfaces, multilayers, and so on.
They were not successful. We realized a large magnetic moment close to atomic value
by creating some special state, the so-called metastable state, through magnetic ion-
beam mixing(MIBM) in the bulk phase. This ferromagnetic moment can play an important
role as a promising candidate in sciences and focused on stable alloys and crystalline
multilayers so far.
